Can You Put Air Conditioning in a Conservatory?

Yes. A correctly sized fitted split system can cool a conservatory in summer and heat it in winter. Conservatories often need more capacity than ordinary rooms because glazing, roof type, sunlight and insulation change the load. Assess the structure before selecting a package.

A conservatory can become the least usable room in the house.

Direct sunlight heats the glass, floor and furniture. The room can then lose heat quickly after sunset or during winter.

A reversible air-to-air heat pump addresses both problems. It transfers heat outside during cooling and brings heat inside during heating.

Floor area alone is not enough

A 20m² conservatory can need a different capacity from a 20m² bedroom. Glazing, roof construction and direct sun must be assessed.

What is the best air conditioner for a conservatory?

A fitted inverter split system is normally the strongest long-term option for controlled heating and cooling.

It uses an indoor unit and an outdoor unit connected by refrigerant pipework. The UK Government's Energy Technology List describes reversible air-to-air heat pumps as systems that can provide heating and cooling.

Winter performance still depends on insulation, air leakage, outdoor temperature and system capacity.

What size air conditioner does a conservatory need?

Do not select a conservatory system from floor area alone.

A suitable assessment should record:

  • Room length, width and ceiling height.
  • Roof type and insulation.
  • Glazing type and total glazed area.
  • Direction of the strongest sunlight.
  • Blinds, external shading or solar-control glass.
  • Whether doors separate the conservatory from the house.

Where can the indoor and outdoor units go?

Indoor unit position

The indoor unit needs a firm mounting surface, clear airflow and a practical pipe route.

Many conservatories have limited masonry because most surfaces are glazed. A suitable house wall or solid return wall can simplify installation.

  • Keep discharge air clear of blinds and tall furniture.
  • Avoid directing strong airflow at a fixed seating position.
  • Allow service access beneath and around the unit.
  • Plan the condensate drain with a continuous fall where possible.

Outdoor unit position

The condenser needs clear airflow, stable support and maintenance access.

It should not sit inside an enclosed conservatory or unventilated box. It must reject heat outdoors during cooling.

Drainage and electrical supply

Cooling removes moisture from the room air. The indoor unit produces condensate that needs a reliable drain route.

The electrical supply must match the chosen system and installation design. Fixed electrical work must meet applicable requirements.

Does a conservatory's exempt status matter?

Planning Portal states that a conservatory may be exempt from Building Regulations when specific conditions are met.

These conditions include ground-level construction, a floor area below 30m² and separation from the house. It also lists an independent heating system with separate controls.

Adding air conditioning does not prove or remove an exemption by itself. Check the conservatory's construction and planned work with Building Control.

  • Improve roof and wall insulation where practical.
  • Close sun-facing blinds before the room heats up.

Operate the room correctly

  • Close windows when outside air is hotter.
  • Ventilate when the outside air becomes cooler.
  • Keep doors closed while the AC is running.
  • Use a sensible set temperature.
